Speaking during a public address in Bihar, Modi promised justice, declaring that terrorists and their supporters would be pursued “to the ends of the Earth.”
India swiftly blamed Pakistan for supporting cross-border terrorism. In response, New Delhi implemented a series of diplomatic measures: it closed a key border crossing, suspended the Indus water-sharing treaty, expelled Pakistani defence officials, and reduced its diplomatic mission in Islamabad.
Pakistan has denied involvement and stated it will discuss the situation in a national security meeting.
Kashmir police named three suspected militants involved in the attack, two of whom are Pakistani nationals.
Authorities also offered rewards for information leading to their capture. Indian forces have launched a large-scale manhunt across the region, increasing military and police presence.
A little-known militant group, the Kashmir Resistance, claimed responsibility for the attack. In a post online, the group cited anger over the settlement of over 85,000 “outsiders” in Kashmir, which they view as an attempt to change the region’s demographics.
The incident undermines the Indian government’s narrative that the 2019 revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status brought peace and stability to the region.
Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had promoted this move as a turning point for development and unity.
Tensions between India and Pakistan remain high, with both nuclear-armed nations trading accusations.
Modi ended his speech with a warning in English to the international community: “Terrorism will not go unpunished. Every effort will be made to ensure that justice is done.”
Seems like the worst is yet to come?
