Design and Specifications

The Ingenuity helicopter is a small, lightweight aircraft that weighs only 1.8 kilograms and is equipped with two rotors that spin in opposite directions.

Powered Flight on Mars

The Ingenuity helicopter has completed 71 flights since first taking to the skies above the Red Planet on April 19, 2021, far exceeding its originally planned technology demonstration of up to five flights.

Achievements on Mars

The many highlights of Ingenuity’s historic and successful activities on Mars include:

  • The first aircraft to achieve powered, controlled flight on another planet, a feat that’s been called a “Wright Brothers moment”.
  • Completing 128.3 flying minutes, covering 10.5 miles (17.0 km), and reaching altitudes as high as 78.7 ft (24.0 m).
  • Successfully flying in the extremely thin Martian atmosphere.
  • Previewing areas of Mars of possible interest for the Perseverance rover to explore.
  • Paving the way for future aerial explorers at Mars and, potentially, other space destinations.

The end of NASA’s Ingenuity helicopter mission

As of January 25, 2024, NASA’s Ingenuity helicopter has ended its mission at the Red Planet after surpassing expectations and making dozens more flights than planned.

On January 20, 2024, communications were reestablished between Ingenuity and NASA’s Perseverance rover

The Ingenuity team has determined the helicopter is power-positive and is sitting vertically on the surface.

Next steps include running further diagnostic checks, commanding Ingenuity to take photos of its location on the surface, and performing a spin test.

Conclusion

The Ingenuity helicopter has been a remarkable success story for NASA and has demonstrated the potential of aerial exploration on other planets.

Its many achievements on Mars have been nothing short of remarkable, and it will be exciting to see what the f
